Twenty years of hunter-led conservation
The Fiordland Wapiti Foundation began with a simple belief: conservation works best when people are part of the solution.
For more than two decades our volunteers have invested thousands of hours into protecting Fiordland through deer management, predator control, hut maintenance and conservation projects.
In 2026, that work was formally recognised when the Fiordland Wapiti herd became New Zealand’s first Herd of Special Interest (HOSI). This landmark recognition acknowledges the value of well-managed game animals and supports a balanced approach where conservation and hunting can work together.
The Fiordland Project is the natural next step in that journey as it transforms a successful volunteer model into a long-term, self-sustaining conservation initiative.
