Fiordland Wapiti Foundation

Annual Report

2022-23

The Fiordland Wapiti Foundation, we think of ourselves as caretakers of the 175,000 ha called the Wapiti area of Fiordland we are only one of those who inhabit the area. The place is rough and unapologetic and receives very limited human visitors other than hunters.

In this precious country of ours there’s a lot of talk about deer management but very little is achieved. The Wapiti Foundation are the pioneers and has done deer management for almost 20 years.

Our primary goal is to manage the impacts that deer have on the environment in Wapiti area of Fiordland. Second to that is providing a low number of high-quality Fiordland wapiti deer resource for hunters to hunt.

Our conservation story also extends into protecting our native species by predator control focusing on the removing of stoats, rats, and opossums.

We are a self-funding organisation who receive zero governmental financial support, yet we achieve amazing outcomes for conservation.

But our true story is our people dedicated to and focused on delivering great outcomes for Fiordland.

We are the

Fiordland Wapiti

Foundation.
